Rubbing a dog with petrol is life-threatening and leads to severe poisoning.
Petrol is highly irritating to the skin, causes damage to mucous membranes, poisoning from petroleum products in dogs – PetMD, convulsions, breathing difficulties and can be fatal, as it is absorbed through the skin or enters the body when the dog grooms itself. An immediate visit to the vet is essential.
Risks and symptoms:
Acute poisoning: Trembling, shaking, vomiting, diarrhoea, apathy, restlessness, breathing difficulties, circulatory problems up to and including loss of consciousness.
Skin & coat: Severe irritation, burns, destruction of the skin barrier, hair loss.
Internal damage: Poisoning in small animals – petroleum derivatives – warning of pulmonary haemorrhage, liver damage and kidney damage.
Ingestion/inhalation: Petrol vapours are toxic. When the dog grooms itself, it ingests the poison directly, which can lead to erosion of the mucous membranes in the gastrointestinal tract.
First aid:
Remove the dog from the contaminated area immediately.
Do not use water, so as not to spread the petrol further.
Poisoning in dogs: The coat must be shaved where it is covered in oil.
Consult a vet immediately.
