Nowadays, ear cropping and tail docking in dogs is mainly performed for aesthetic reasons, but it does not benefit the dog and has significant disadvantages: it is a painful amputation, impairs communication (ear and tail wagging) and social behaviour with other dogs, can lead to chronic pain and behavioural problems, and is prohibited by law in many countries.
1. Myth: Dobermans, Cane Corsos, Pit Bulls, AmStaff and other breeds are born with pointed, short ears and stubby tails.
--> False!!! Their ears and tails have been mutilated through surgical intervention!
2. Pain and suffering: The procedure is painful, often performed without anaesthesia or improperly, which can lead to chronic pain and phantom pain.
3. Loss of communication: Dogs use their ears and tails intensively for non-verbal communication. Cropping severely restricts their expressive behaviour, which can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts with other dogs.
4. Behavioural problems: Restricted communication can lead to aggression or social insecurity, as the dog can no longer express itself properly.
5. Health risks: There is a risk of infection, poor healing and chronic suffering.
6. Aesthetics vs. well-being: The reasons are mostly due to human vanity and do not serve the welfare of the animal.
