How to kill a fish
To the anglers among you:Please kill the fish you catch properly, rather than letting them suffocate in agony. Just because they can’t scream out loud doesn’t mean you can let them suffer. In some countries, there are laws that stipulate specific methods of killing. Main reasons for professional killing (stunning + heart stab/gill cut): Avoiding agony: Choking in the air is a slow and painful process. Pisces can feel pain and suffer when taken out of the water for up to an hour before losing consciousness. Professional procedure: The method consists of... Read more...

Separation puppies from mom
Separating puppies from their mother and littermates too early (before 8 to 10 weeks of age) often leads to serious behavioural problems.  Including anxiety, aggression, excessive barking, separation anxiety and a lack of bite inhibition. They miss out on crucial socialisation, which can lead to lifelong difficulties in coping with stress and interacting with other dogs. Key consequences in detail: Behavioural disorders:  Puppies separated too early (often before 60 days) are more prone to anxiety, nervousness when out on walks and possessive behaviour (food guarding). Lack of socialisation:  The mother... Read more...
No cow milk for dogs and cats
Cow’s milk is unsuitable for most adult dogs and cats, as they lack the enzyme lactase needed to break down the milk sugar (lactose) it contains. This leads to lactose intolerance, which can cause diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal pain and vomiting.  Main reasons against cow’s milk: Lactose intolerance: After weaning from their mother’s milk, dogs and cats stop producing the enzyme lactase. The undigested lactose reaches the large intestine, leading to digestive problems. High fat content: Normal cow’s milk is too high in fat for cats, which can lead to obesity... Read more...
Don't put petrol on your pet
Rubbing a dog with petrol is life-threatening and leads to severe poisoning.  Petrol is highly irritating to the skin, causes damage to mucous membranes, poisoning from petroleum products in dogs – PetMD, convulsions, breathing difficulties and can be fatal, as it is absorbed through the skin or enters the body when the dog grooms itself. An immediate visit to the vet is essential.  Risks and symptoms:Acute poisoning: Trembling, shaking, vomiting, diarrhoea, apathy, restlessness, breathing difficulties, circulatory problems up to and including loss of consciousness. Skin & coat: Severe irritation, burns,... Read more...
Participation at ministry meeting
My first participation at the ministry of agriculture meeting regarding animal welfare. It remains to be seen what will be implemented and when. The fact is that without international assistance, the number of sterilisations in Mauritius is not sufficient to have a significant impact on curbing the overpopulation of strays. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Cji93P8gG/ Read more...

Sweating in dogs/cats
Dogs and cats can sweat only through the pads of their paws!  This is not sufficient to cool them down in hot weather. Instead, they mainly use panting (dogs) or grooming their fur to regulate their temperature, which causes saliva to evaporate and cool them down. Important facts about cooling down: Sweat glands: Dogs and cats have sweat glands on their paw pads, but these are more functional for marking than for cooling. Panting: Dogs actively cool themselves down through the evaporation of moisture on their tongues and in their airways.... Read more...
Ear cropping and tail docking
Nowadays, ear cropping and tail docking in dogs is mainly performed for aesthetic reasons, but it does not benefit the dog and has significant disadvantages: it is a painful amputation, impairs communication (ear and tail wagging) and social behaviour with other dogs, can lead to chronic pain and behavioural problems, and is prohibited by law in many countries. 1. Myth: Dobermans, Cane Corsos, Pit Bulls, AmStaff and other breeds are born with pointed, short ears and stubby tails.--> False!!! Their ears and tails have been mutilated through surgical intervention! 2. Pain... Read more...
